Abstract

The Cultivate model is an experiential learning framework incorporating design-thinking instruction, community and student collaboration and real-world, problem-solving within a higher education setting. Students work with actual businesses, identify challenges and use the skills they have learned to ideate and strategize solutions for the clients. Cultivate has been used at UNK to meet the demands of experiential learning opportunities for students to prepare them for future employment and entrepreneurs by equipping them with critical thinking and problem-solving skills (Martz et al., 2016). This teaching approach has been applied with UNK college students, rural Nebraska high school students and students from Ireland through a partnership with the Galway-Mayo Technical Institute. The Creative Psychological Capital (C-PCQ 12) assessment has been used to measure success in several of the cases. The model has been used in different formats including one-day workshops, online, over the course of a semester through a student organization and within a credit-bearing class setting.
