The proper spelling of the fort is Kearny, differing from the local city of Kearney, Nebraska.

Note that, while this was originally a dissertation conducted at the University of Iowa, Mantor republished the text while chairing the Department of Social Sciences at Nebraska State Teachers College at Kearney.
