Abstract/Description
My study aims to understand how students’ beliefs and feelings about their racial, ethnic, and cultural identities impact the creation of artwork in the art classroom. This is achieved by examining students' interactions with their teachers in the art classroom through autoethnography and ethnography. This study finds that students express their complex cultural identities through artmaking by incorporating visual culture and lived experiences connected to their families and the cultures they grew up in. This research provides art teachers with practical strategies to design and implement more culturally sustaining art lessons so they can better understand their students’ cultural identities.
