Abstract/Sinopsis

Gladys Godínez was born in Guatemala City, Guatemala. In 1989 the Guatemalan Civil War and the desire to be together as a family drove the Godínez family to immigrate to the United States. Godínez lived in Inglewood, CA when she first immigrated to the USA. Godínez attended school and learned English. The large Latino population of Inglewood blunted the cultural shock. As part of the early wave of Latino immigrants to Lexington, NE, Godínez and her family faced cultural shock, language challenges, and discrimination. Godínez graduated from UNK with a degree in political science. Godínez currently runs her own non-profit and works to help Latino people in Nebraska.

Gladys Godínez nació en la Ciudad de Guatemala, Guatemala. En 1989 la familia Godínez inmigró a los Estados Unidos para reunirse con su padre y para escapar la Guerra Civil Guatemalteca. Godínez vivó en Inglewood, CA cuando llegó a EE. UU. Godínez fue a la escuela y aprendió inglés. La gran población latina de Inglewood mitigó el choque cultural. Como parte de la primera ola de inmigrantes latinos en Lexington, NE, Godínez y su familia enfrentaron choque cultural, desafíos de idioma, y discriminación. Godínez se graduó de la UNK con una licenciatura en ciencias políticas. Actualmente, Godínez dirige su propia organización sin fines de lucro y ayuda a las personas latinas en Nebraska.
