Biography
Dr. Calhoun’s federal service spanned 40 years. She worked as a scientist and administrator for the Food and Drug Administration, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, and for the National Institutes of Health (NIH). She retired from NIH as the Deputy Director for the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), which she joined in 1995 as Associate Director for Collaborative Research. Throughout her tenure at NIAAA, Dr. Calhoun had considerable impact as the Chair of the Interagency Coordinating Committee on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, while endeavoring to develop programs to increase minority faculty and students involved in research and for international research on fetal alcohol spectrum disorders. Also at NIH, Dr. Calhoun served as Deputy Chief for Review of the Division of Research Grants (currently the Center for Scientific Review). Today, Dr. Calhoun serves as Interim Director for the Biomedical Biotechnology Research Institute at North Carolina Central University (NCCU), a historically black university, where she is a Leader for the NCCU-Duke Partnership that addresses pilot studies, community engagement and workforce development. She is on the Board of Directors for PIRE, the Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation, and the Board of Directors for Hayti Promise Community Development Corporation in Durham, NC.
