Abstract

The current polarized state of U.S. politics is observable across the national, regional, and local levels. Postmodernism has aided in pushing fields of academic research, particularly social science research to the margins. Although the fields of academic research and policy display a wide disconnect, this presentation provides perspective as to how research can be effective for policy, as well as impactful in shaping policy. This presentation seeks to address how the field of academic research can be effective for policy, as well as how this academic research impacts and shapes policy. We will analyze the current hot button issues such as sexual education, the overturn of Roe v. Wade, and (LGBTQ) rights, in concern with their respective empirical research findings ultimately to build upon the benefits in closing the wide gap between research and policy. Finally, this presentation will address the opportunity for individuals within academia to help close the gap between social science research and policy applications.

Post undergrad, I am currently awaiting admission to PhD programs in social psychology. One fun fact about me is that last semester is that I had the opportunity to take an Italian language course with my grandfather.
