Abstract

This paper examines the expectations that women in the music industry face to appear as empowered women while remaining within the societal definition of such empowerment. This paper explores a music video created by Maty Noyes, an up and coming musical artist. Through the use of feminist authors Feona Attwood and Rosaline Gill, Maty Noyes' musical video is explored as both a personal statement and a performance of expected feminine tropes. Ultimately, the paper recognizes the impactful statements made by both Attwood and Gill and their relevance to the test case at hand, while discussing the moments that they fall short. This paper covers the topics of media sexualization, the music industry, the useful applications of current feminist literature critiques, and topics that have yet to be explored.

Presenter Bio

I am currently a second-year undergraduate student at the University of Denver. I am a double major in Biology and Gender and Women's Studies. I greatly enjoy exploring the intersection between my two disciplines. The paper I am currently submitting was the gateway that opened me up to the idea of pursuing GWST as both a personal exploration and useful career tool. I hope to enter the medical field as a doctor after undergrad and want to use the topics I have covered in my secondary discipline to inform my interactions with medical professionals and patients .
