Abstract

With the overturn of Roe v. Wade in 2022 many states quickly implemented laws restricting access to abortion. Oklahoma was one of the states that adopted restrictive anti-choice laws that punish pregnant people by implementing fines, license removal, and jail time. Repercussions on ban laws before Roe v. Wade have showed declines in mental health, socioeconomic status, and overall reproductive health. The purpose of this research is to study the perceptions and feelings Oklahomans have on childcare, reproductive health, and autonomy after the passing of radical abortion ban laws. The study will conduct a survey about perceptions about topics like raising children, autonomy and ethics regarding new laws and will be measured on a Likert scale. I plan to use these outcomes to drive future research in reproductive health, highlight commonalities seen in communities and showcase marginalized populations that are affected more than others by these restrictive anti-choice laws.

Presenter Bio

My name is Lucian Nelson and I'm a senior attending the University of Central Oklahoma pursuing his Bachelors in Biology/Biomedical Sciences. I'm also in an internship at UCO where I'm a Sexual Health Ambassador where I go around campus and educate students on safe sex, gender, STI infection and a myriad of other topics. I plan to attend medical school in the future and want to hopefully center my practice around reproductive health, so this future goal and my internship are big drives for the research I'm conducting about the anti-choice laws in Oklahoma.
