Abstract/Description
This case study explores the impact of Words Save Lives, an event expanded to Leavenworth, Kansas and hosted by LV Arts Inc. in September 2022. Using a mixed methods approach to data collection, this study is guided by four research questions: 1.) How can arts and humanities events, programs, and initiatives be used as a means for arts-based placemaking in Leavenworth? 2.) Do residents of Leavenworth feel a connection to the arts as a result of participating in arts and humanities events, programming, and initiatives and, more specifically, Words Save Lives? 3.) Does the Words Save Lives event in Leavenworth increase social and emotional wellbeing and sense of community? 4.) What is the likelihood of community members supporting arts and humanities events, programming, and initiatives in the future? Intended outcomes of the event were assessed through a variety of measures, including a survey, interviews, and observation and artifact analysis, to reveal positive impacts from the Words Save Lives event in Leavenworth. Areas for improvement as well as possibilities for more arts integration practices in the Leavenworth community are also explored.
