Abstract/Sinopsis

Esthefany López Cruz is the daughter of Honduran immigrants. In 1998, her parents decided to embark on the dangerous journey to the United States to escape the devastation of Hurricane Mitch. López Cruz was only one and half at the time. The family settled down in Hastings, Nebraska to be close to López’s Cruz grandmother. Because of debates around Temporary Protected Status, López Cruz fears that the government will send Hurricane Mitch survivors like her back to Honduras. López Cruz faced many challenges growing up in a Spanish-speaking household while attending a school that taught subjects in English. Despite that, López Cruz pursued and obtained a university degree. In the future, she hopes to use her knowledge of both English and Spanish to help other immigrants who struggle with English. López Cruz encourages other immigrants in the same position as her to thank their parents for everything they did to create a better life for their children.

Esthefany López Cruz es hija de inmigrantes hondureños. En 1989 sus padres decidieron iniciar un viaje peligroso a EE. UU., para escapar de la destrucción del Huracán Mitch que destruyó su lugar de origen. López Cruz tenía apenas un año de edad en ese tiempo. Después de llegar a los Estados Unidos, su familia se estableció en Hastings, Nebraska para estar cerca de la abuela de López Cruz. López Cruz enfrentó muchas dificultades al crecer en un hogar hispano mientras asistía a una escuela donde se usaba el inglés para las clases. Actualmente López Cruz enfrenta temores de que el gobierno deporte a los sobrevivientes al huracán Mitch. A pesar de todos estos obstáculos, la perseverancia de López Cruz le ha permitido asistir a alcanzar un nivel de educación más alto. En el futuro, espera usar su conocimiento del inglés y del español para ayudar a inmigrantes que enfrentan dificultades con el inglés. López Cruz anima a otros inmigrantes en la misma posición que ella a ser agradecidos con sus padres por todo lo que hacen para crear un mejor futuro para sus hijos.
