Abstract

In this study, we test the impact of Chief Sustainability Officers (CSOs) on Environmental, Sustainability, and Governance (ESG) performance measures. We find evidence that the presence of a CSO within a firm is positively associated with ESG ratings on all three components of ESG. These findings are robust in additional tests using Propensity Scored Matching (PSM) and Entropy Balanced samples. Additionally, we find evidence that CSO appointment has a positive impact on total ESG ratings in the initial year of appointment.
